Just like us, parrots too need a healthy diet for their well being. A parrot’s diet usually comprises of grains, some cooked meat and a few varieties of fruits and vegetables. Apart from this, see that your parrot drinks a fresh supply of water daily to avoid dehydration.

Parrots can be fed twice a day, with the food mixed well in water in the parrot’s bowl. Care should be taken to see that Your Pet is fed in the right proportion as any excess food can make the bird sick. Advice of your veterinarian can be sought to know which food is best and in what proportion.

A pet shop is a good place to buy bird food for your parrot. Bird seeds are usually recommended foods, but take care to check the sunflower seed content in it as these seeds contain high fats and are deficient in other nutrients like vitamin A and calcium. If your parrot picks on only its favorite portion from the seed mix, then discourage this as it can lead to nutrition deficiency.

Pellets are another food option for your pet. The minerals and vitamins in the pellets help your parrot to stay active and healthy. You may mix the pellets with some fresh vegetables for a balanced diet. Bird food companies provide formulated bird foods for all round nutrition of your pet. This food comprises of vegetables, grains, seeds, fruits, fortified minerals and vitamins – all baked into pellets. Such foods are best for the very picky parrots.

Parrots are as innocent as kids and can gorge on any food they see. Scrutinize what your pet puts into his beak or else he may fall sick. See that he is fed on a complete diet as each species of parrot has a special diet need.

Parrots enjoy eating fresh vegetables and fruits. Care should be taken to finely chop the fruits and veggies before mixing it with the pellet food. Keep changing your parrot’s diet now and then. It is agreed that fresh vegetables are great for your parrot – leafy green veggies are excellent foods while lettuce and celery, though high in water and fiber content are not complete foods.

Be creative in feeding your parrot with veggies. You can hang the vegetables from the side of the cage or offer them in chunks. Some recommended veggies for your parrot are – sweet potatoes, carrots and leafy greens like Swiss chard, beet greens, turnip greens, parsley, green beans, cauliflower and broccoli. Parrots also love to eat cucumber, corn and snow peas but never give avocado.

Feed your parrot with foods but within limits. Make sure your pet does not eat apple seeds and piths as these are toxic. Feed your pet with fruits like berries, pineapple, papaya, grapes, apples, apricots and cranberries.

Sprouted seed are also recommended as they are an excellent source of nutrition and are laden with antioxidants, enzymes, vitamins and minerals. Even your parrot will love to eat it. Vitamin and mineral supplements are not recommended if your parrot is eating a balanced diet. Your vet will be the best person to advice about it.
