What is this poem trying to say?

I can’t really figure out what the theme or subject is because I’m not good with symbolism. What do you think?

A Bird Came Down the Walk by Emily Dickinson

A bird came down the walk:
He did not know I saw;
He bit an angle-worm in halves
And ate the fellow, raw.

And then he drank a dew
From a convenient grass,
And then hopped sidewise to the wall
To let a beetle pass.

He glanced with rapid eyes
That hurried all abroad,–
They looked like frightened beads, I thought;
He stirred his velvet head

Like one in danger; cautious,
I offered him a crumb,
And he unrolled his feathers
And rowed him softer home

Than oars divide the ocean,
Too silver for a seam,
Or butterflies, off banks of noon,
Leap, splashless, as they swim.

I see there are many interpretations. I believe that there’s more going on here than is mentioned even in the academic links that were posted.

In the first two stanzas it’s as if the bird is not just a bird. Otherwise, why the implicit comparisons between the bird’s behavior and a man’s? Usually it’s people who come down walks. Usually it’s people who step aside to let someone pass. And why mention that he ate the worm “raw” unless you’re thinking of human behavior. Birds don’t cook.

So the bird is a stand-in for a man. Knowing what we know about Dickinson, that she was a spinster who had a long and ultimately unsatisfying relationship with a man, it’s easy to see in these stanzas her fascination with the behavior of men, which she apparently sees as being only partially civilized.

In the third stanza and the first line of the fourth, he is showing caution and fear. This sounds like caution about the relationship that Dickinson would like to have.

So what does she do? She offers him a crumb. It’s not very obvious whether or not he accepts it. Some interpreters say that the bird flies away without taking the crumb. I disagree.

The last six lines are to me a most extraordinarily beautiful description of something. Transcendently beautiful and strange.

But what’s being described? It’s not the bird flying away, or why use the word “home”?

I think the most reasonable interpretation is that she’s describing a sexual encounter with the one who clearly accepted her “crumb.” It could be real, it could be imagined, so don’t argue that Dickinson never had that kind of relationship. But I do think that’s what the poem is really about.

By the way, the word in the last line should be “plashless,” not “splashless.”

Birds will generally be kept in cages throughout their life and this environment can seem very confined at times. Birds are very intelligent creatures and some are smarter than others. Every bird has a vain streak in them and many birds will fall in love with their image several times a day. This occurs when mirrors are placed in their cages and many birds will show that they love the new furnishings by singing for hours on end for no apparent reason. Some females are delighted to see a fresh face in the crowd and might think that it is mating season.

Mirrors come in many settings and the most common is a mirror with a perch attachment. Some of the mirrors will come with openings that can hold a small amount of food and with the small beads that are placed across the bottom of the mirror the bird will have plenty of opportunities for playing throughout the day. Some peck the beads and move them back and forth, and larger birds will use their feet at times to move the colorful objects.

There are many toys that make excellent pet products for birds that are active for the better part of a day. Some birds are not concerned with toys because they have poor eyesight and are content to feel a strong perch under their feet. The toy products offered to birds can keep them fit with very little effort by the bird. Other birds are quite inquisitive and will devote many hours to seeing what else the toy will offer them in the manner of play that they are interested in doing.

Some bird pet products allow a bird to dangle on branches just as they would in their own bird habitats in the wild. Parrots are famous for trying out new toys by hanging upside down and using their beak to grab hold of a rawhide chew with a bell attached to it. These Large Birds are not afraid of metals an will tap the bells a lot and to some pet owners, these sounds might become quite irritating.

Many birds are quite capable of climbing stairs and will spend many hours playing on them. These are pet products for birds that have a high activity rating and carefully trimmed nails. These stairways do not have to lead anywhere in particular because birds get a lot of enjoyment just climbing up and down on them. Some models will offer a bird a reward if they climb to the top properly to receive it.

upland bird hunting/shotgun shooting ?’s?

i’m going upland bird hunting this year for the 1st time. i’m bringing my mossberg 500 12 ga pump. how far should my bead be from the bird when i pull the trigger? any tips?

First off- ALWAYS follow thru with your shot, even if you miss.

Second- keep from your waist up very mobile and from the waist down steady.

Third- go to the local shooting range or if you have what you need, shoot skeet/trap on a windy day. The skeet will jump in the wind, which simulates a bird flying more so than shooting skeet on a calm day. You never know which way the bird will go, so by shooting when it’s windy, you’ll get a good idea of how to move because like I said earlier- the skeet will jump and do things that they normally wouldn’t do when the weather is nice.

Fourth- do NOT worry about the bead. If you are looking down the barrel and have your head on the stock just right (not too high or too low), where ever you look, the gun should follow. If your doing it right, as soon as you get on the bird, you should be able to shoot (thats one reason why follow thru is important). With shotguns, its more like pointing than aiming, so looking/worrying about the bead will mess you up.
