Canaries Lovebirds
can I group a lovebird with a canary?
i’ve read that tropical birds generally like to be grouped with other tropical birds of any breed. if I get a lovebird and a canary and put them in the same cage, will they get along? if so, which genders would get along the best together? thanks.
I’m not sure you should get any more info about birds from where you learned that from. No matter if they are the same sex, opposite sexes, same breed, or different breed there is just no grantee that they will except each other. All birds are like that just like humans. Think about it, just because two humans are short, white, fat, and from Switzerland does not mean if they live in the same house they will be friends. Some birds will just not get along no matter what and will kill or severely hurt each other. I’m sure you don’t want to take that chance. Use two cages. Introduce them slowly and only while you are in the room with them. After you see how they react to each other after a few weeks you will know if they can be caged together or not. Chances are it’s not going to work out. Like Kim said, lovebirds as well as other parrots are aggressive to other birds.
Canaries Lovebirds
Lovebird Species And Their Amazing Characteristics
The genus Agapornis or the African lovebird has nine species. Eight of these lovebird species originated from mainland Africa while the remaining one originated from the Madagascar region. Three species are common varieties while five species belong to the rare kind.
The common varieties of the lovebird include the masked lovebird, the peachfaced lovebird and the Fischer’s lovebird species. On the other hand, the uncommon or rare ones comprise the bright red-faced lovebird, the Nyasa lovebird, the Madagascar lovebird, the black-collared, the Abyssinian lovebird and the black-cheeked lovebirds.
The masked lovebird species are identified through their face that is covered with green mask-like color. Wild ones have blue mask or cobalt. Meanwhile, peachfaced lovebirds are the most popular and most common in terms of captivity. They are noisy lovebird species. If you have one at home, be careful in picking a cage as they need to be safe. They can weigh up to sixty grams. The peachfaced is both inquisitive and vibrant by nature.
Fischer’s lovebird is also a very common lovebird species. It was named after the person who discovered it, German explorer Gustav Fischer. It is identified for its green wing, chest and back and its bluish rump. It is a native east-central Africa and Northern Tanzania. It inhabits remote trees with grass plains. It has the ability to fly straight and speedily.
Nyasa lovebirds typically come in green color. They have different mutations such as the bluish Nyasa and the lutino Nyasa. Another rare variety is the Madagascar lovebird species which is also known as Maddies to many lovebirds experts and enthusiasts. This specie originated Madagascar, making it unique from the rest of the species which came from Africa.
Compared to the other lovebird varieties, the Maddie is very small which can only weigh as much as grams and not reaching kilos. It has an apprehensive and delicate looks and has somewhat finches rather than the hook bills which birds have in common. It has a small beak and usually chooses finch and/or canary seeds over sunflower or safflower seed blends as their staple food.
Black-collared species are withdrawn and not competent in terms of breeding in captivity. The Abyssinian lovebird is very rare that they are not normally preferred as a pet while the black-cheeked African lovebird species, on the other hand, can consist of the bluish variation aside from the black which is more common.

Which bird would you recommend most?
I think both Indian Ringneck and Plum-Headed Parakeets are so beautiful and some time in the future I’d love to own one. Which one is cooler? I watched videos on YouTube and the Indian Ringneck seems like it’s more outgoing and talks pretty cool. I find different opinions online of each bird: some people say they make wonderful pets and others say they can be the worst thing ever. I don’t want a Budgie, Cocketiel, Lovebirds, Canaries, etc. I really have been doing research and I only like those two – but will only get one; and before I do, I’ll make sure I’m 100% sure of having this bird for a pet. So please, I just need informative and experienced answers only. Thanks!
I think if you want a bird for a companion the Ringneck is the way to go. if you want a bird that looks pretty and isn’t annoying, then you should go with a Star Finch. They are delicate but they are beautiful and they are song-birds so they sing in the mornings (not loudly).

but that is if you want one more for a decoration. They are tiny and dont like to be handled. They are also fairly rare and can be costly.
If you are looking for a friendly companion-bird, the Indian Ringneck is the best choice, as I said before. Parakeets are often.. self centered. =)
