Food Pionus
My white cap pionus is not moving around his cage and he’s not eating or drinking?
He has been sleeping for the past day and a half, I thought he might be cold, so I built fire, but that has not helped. He did drink some water yesterday, but no food. He tried to eat his favorite peanut, but started to crack the shell and gave up. I cracked all his peanuts and he still hasn’t touched them. I uncovered his cage this a.m. and he was at the very bottom and not moving. He is just sitting there with eyes closed and not very responsive. I moved his closer to fire and tried to give him water, but he is not having it. I also tried to move him, but he won’t let go of bottom of cage…
take him to the vet. he sounds very sick.

Hi Tielmomnm, I wanted to THANK YOU so much for all the information you gave me on my Blueheaded Pionus, the list of food is great! I am not sure how to use this questions thing, my granddaughter got me started on this and I am hooked (LOL) but she shows me all the details and is not here for me to ask how I can Thank you…. So Thanks. My bird is so picky with fruits, he loves the veggies, nuts and meat. I had NO ideal that he should not eat out of my mouth. Of course it is not food I chewed, I just hold with my teeth and he grabs it. I am trying to find a book on Blue headed Pionus, no luck yet. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate the information you passed on to me. Oh, Can You tell me how to potty train him, he still poops on me and I have been told you can train them not to? Thanks

Potty training involves more training of YOU than him…but the object is to observe him closely and determine how frequently he seems to be “going”. When he is due to “go”, start watching for what I call a little pottie dance (a step or two backwards and a butt wiggle), then you start telling him a word to associate with the behavior. Then simply start taking him to where you want him to pottie and give him the command…wait patiently until he actually performs….then reward with a small treat like a piece of popcorn (airpopped) or maybe an almond sliver or a pea from a peapod (my meyers will do anything for a peapod).
I prefer to see birds trained to potty in their cages…I don’t want them to get the idea that they can’t go there and HAVE to go over someplace else. And hey, what’s a little poop amoung friends.
