Overweight Gerbils?

Hi,
I have 2 male gerbils I am concerned for. They are at least 3 years old and are really overwieght. I take them out for 30 minutes everyday, but they won’t run around too much anymore. I feed them the KAYTEE Fiesta Hamster and Gerbil mix. I give them about 1/4 cup everyday, though they pick through the mix to get to the sunflower seeds. They won’t eat the lab blocks, I have tried that. They are probably 3 years old and I give them toilet paper tubes and paper towel tubes to chew on. So how can I get them to lose wieght? I don’t want to endanger their lives because I know that fat animals can get cancer easier then healthy rodents. Also, they are in this cage, http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/I/21J9J9Y0SYL._AA160_.jpg, except that mine is blue, has no wheel, and has plexi glass over the wire floors/levels. Also, what are the signs of cancer in small rodents?

I had 3 female gerbils. They were all 3 years old when they really plumped out. Unfourtunatly they died a few months later. They ate almost excatly the same diet, were in carefresh bedding, and ate toilet paper rolls. The life expectancy is only 2-3 years for gerbils. This is probably a sign that your gerbils are on their way out. Their age has caught up with them and their metabolism isn’t as fast anymore. Don’t force them to try to lose weight. Just spend time with your little men.

Okay, so I’m making a list of what to get for 2 gerbils. Tell me if there’s anything I need to add or take off…? Thanks so much! Also, name suggestions would be GREAT if you have them! I’m considering Sylvester for one (I think they’ll be two boys)… but not sure at all.

Sounds like you’re very educated about gerbils, I’m very happy to see that =D.
Now it sounds like alot of stuff for a little 10 gal. Could you possibly upgrade to a 15 or 20?
