My parrot enjoys chewing holes in my stepson’s shirts. Is she trying to preen his feathers?
LOL – he likes to chew on shirts. Isn’t it wonderful that he is comfortable enough with your stepson to play?
My best suggestion for you is to take one of his older tee shirts and sew buttons, beads, and leather strips on to it so that the baby has something more to play with. Have him toss that shirt on when he is going to play with the birdies. I’ve always made necklaces from strips of leather and placed beads and buttons and other small hard objects on to it to give my birdies something to chew on other than the material itself.

Why do cockatiels and small parrots cluster and crowd together?
I know some of them were doing the preening and grooming thing, but I wasn’t sure why all of them except maybe 2 in the pet store were all crowded together, some sleeping, etc. I mean they didn’t even have room to squirm. It was like they had all been glued together, they were that close. It didn’t seem cold in the building, and the other enclosures with birds had no clustering behavior. What gives?
It’s a comfort kind of thing. They do this, to comfort themselves, and eachother…. and, to keep warm. Even ‘if’ it didn’t seem cold in the store…. it’s just a ‘thing’. Some birds prefere this ‘crowding’… and you might see one or two of them, that aren’t really all that close to the others…. it’s all in preference. But the majority, ‘need’ to, and like to do it. Totally harmless, and ‘natural’ behavior. : )
