What are the steps to thread a new line in a Zebco 33 reel AFTER the line has been wound around the spool.?
I had removed the outer front cover and have unscewed the (?) theaded part from the shaft and found that a lot of line was wound up inside that unscrewed part (name unknown). I untangled the “birds nest” and rewound the line on the spool but it have not gone any further in threading the line.
All the line that was wrapped around the threaded spindle will probably have lots of nicks in it the line will be weak in that spot,it will be best to replace all the line OR at least behind the nicks you can feel them with your thumb and index finger.
and the very best way to put new line on a reel if you have the room is to secure the new spool or have someone hold it,
take one end of the line step off the amount you want to add
cut it,lay it on the ground-go back to the spool cut that end off,
thread it through the eyelets and the reel cap(or cover)-
tie the line to the spool of the reel use your thumb and index finger to keep it fairly tight going onto the reel,spool all the line on with no weight on the other end, this will keep the kinks and loops out –good luck

How to Play and Land Your Fish (part Five – Reels)
When using a fly reel, there isn’t always a brake, or drag to help you. To prevent big fish from running you can exert varying degrees of thumb pressure inside the spool. Without such pressure there is a real risk that your line will overrun and backlash, with the sometimes “interesting” feature of the “bird’s nest,” however, watch out for your knuckles when the reel handle starts spinning.
With an automatic fly reel, you retrieve the line by pressing a lever, and the reel does the work. Having said that, never play a fish on the spring of an automatic reel. Use the hand retrieve method to take the line in. When you want to wind the retrieved line onto the reel, then use the lever. The automatic reel was never intended to be a mechanical fish player.
Another point with automatics, always run the line between the fingers of your free hand. Pressing the lever without controlling the line this way will mean that there’s a good chance you will run ALL the line onto the reel before you have a chance to release the lever. Resulting into the hook slamming into the tip of your rod, with the almost inevitable result of breaking something.
Line reeled onto the spool of a single action fly reel can form ridges high enough to jam against the cross braces of the reel frame. You can avoid these ridges by using your little finger on your non-winding hand as a level wind device. As the line comes in, simply push it to the right side of the spool, then hook it back to the left side. This will give you a smooth, level spool of line that won’t jam your reel at the critical moment when playing a large fish.
So, we can see that an item that many of us take for granted is actually an integral part of the fishing process. As a final thought, always keep your reel(s) well maintained. This is especially important when fishing salt water, given it’s highly corrosive properties. It doesn’t take but a few minutes at the end of the day to clean, dry, and lightly oil your reel, and you will be repaid with many years of trouble free service. When using fixed spool spinning reels, give a thought to having a couple of spare spools in your tackle box, loaded with different breaking strain lines. This will give you more flexibility when you actually get to your fishing spot and see what type of conditions you are having to fish.

How do I replace the line on my Zebco spincast reel?
It’s a Zebco 404, and I want to put 30 lb test monofilament line on it for catfishing. I know, not the best reel to use to go catfishing, but I’m just a beginner at it. I don’t know how to spool the line onto the reel with out the line getting all bunched up and bird-nesting. Anyone know any good online guides? Thanks in advance!
30lb line? HOLY CRAP! That is why you are getting birds nests. 30lb line is TWICE the size of line for that reel. Your reel will cast like crap and only hold 20-yards of it. It takes 20-yards to cast. If a decent channel cat or flathead takes any drag at all out, it will take all your line out and break at the knot in which it’s connected to the spool. Spool your reel up with 12lb line, Stren is the best. I haven’t broke off even once and I catch fish 10lb – 15lb on it.
After getting some new line (any 12lb line no matter the brand will work, but try to find “Stren” or “Trilene XL”), you need to unscrew the top cap off. Now, run the line through the top cap and out the bottom of it, then tie it around your spool. All you do is use two overhand knots to secure it tight. Clip off any excess line from the knot. Then, screw the cap back on. Keep pressure on your line and start reeling. Periodically open the cap and check to see if the spool is full yet, if it is, screw the cap back on and cut the line off somewhere and run the line through the guides.
Not to discourage you or anything, but 30lb mono is just way too much for a reel that size. Even the biggest size Zebco, the 888 will barely handle a sufficient amount of 30lb line. I’m not just saying don’t use 30lb because “I don’t like it”, but you can’t afford casting all of your line out and having a big fish take the drag and snap all of the line off. Then no line to use at all.
But use 12lb Stren, it will handle any channel cat/bullhead you’re likely to encounter.
