question about calcium and magnesium absorption?
hello everyone i got a question about magnesium. if i drink a cup of milk which has about 29mgs of magnesium but it has about 300mgs of calcium will some of that magnesium get absorbed or will all that calcium prevent the magnesium from being absorbed. iv read that calcium and magnesium compete for absorption sites.

My wife was required to take mineral supplements as part of an osteoporosis treatment/ prevention programme. I remember reading in the literature that we got, concerning the importance of having supplements containing both calcium and magnesium. Calcium alone was not considered adequate. In my country the most used mineral supplement for women is called CALMAG which obviously contains calcium and magnesium. This is an extract from their product literature:

The 10:1 ratio Ca:Mg seems too large according to my memory, and you may be getting too little magnesium. In all these matters I far prefer to consult with the specialists in the field. Information that you obtain from dubious sources are most times bent to suit a particular product or philosophy that is being offered. does calcium inhibit iron absorption?
I’ve been putting my son’s Poly-Vi-Sol w/ Iron vitamins in his milk cup every morning, but another mother just told me not to put his vitamins in milk because calcium inhibits iron absorption.
I don’t see how it would make such a difference from giving him the vitamins directly from the dropper, then giving him a glass of milk to drink.
Have you heard of such a thing?
You are right, giving him a glass of milk afterward would do the same thing (inhibit iron absorption). Mix it with a glass of orange juice (helps iron absorption) and wait three hours before giving any dairy.
