where can i buy a used large bird cage for my macaw?
Ebay prices might be decent… but once you add the shipping, you might as well get a new one! You can sometimes find good prices on cages on craigslist or in the newspaper classifieds. Also check out local bird shows/sales or flea markets. I buy all of my cages at the flea market… they are new and sold at wholesale price. If you do get a used cage… be sure to disinfect the cage with hot soapy water (be careful with cleaners… you have to make sure that NO residue is left on the cage).

Insuring your B&G’s health is important. Why trust just any vet for this. With the amount of money most people tie up in just the acquisition and housing of their pet bird, not including emotional bonding. It just does not make good sense to scrimp on the birds medical care and well being.
It would be wrong for you to wait for an emergency to happen first. Truth is you should locate an avian vet to check out your new purchase to bind any guarantee as to your birds health.
There are a lot of really good, caring, hard working, knowledgeable veterinarians that simply love animals and wish to be apart of their care. However as with human medical professionals there is just to much to know and understand for any vet to specialize in the care and maintenance of all animals.
Suppose you are having some form of behavior problem with your beloved Macaw. You’ve tried everything, you’ve read everything you could get your hands on related to the problem you and the bird are having. You are absolutely certain that you’ve done all you know how to do to correct the situation.
1. You have made certain his diet is correct and varied, the cage is clean the water is always fresh.
2. His cage is more than simply adequate. The cage is fully stocked with toys, foraging toys, correct perches, just everything you can imagine.
3. You spend well over three or four hours a day socializing, playing, entertaining one another.
4. You make certain your treasured Blue And Gold gets plenty of undisturbed rest averaging twelve hours or so daily.
You’ve done all you know how to do and the behavior problem is continuing or possibly becoming more alarming. You just are not able to understand why or what is causing the situation.

Really good care takes some specialization so it is not the time to rely on just a vet, a pet store, over the counter medicines or supplements. It is possible the vet Your Pet store recommends is not necessarily an avian specialist either. Think discounts for referred business. Once again, hopefully you have already found an avian vet.
Vets are trained in the care of domesticated animals, any knowledge of exotics is done on their own as their interests dictate. They just are not trained to care and know all about any animal they may simply come across.
Because economics often dictate. Most avian vets will also see other animals to survive in the business. It is perfectly acceptable to inquire of any vet as to their qualifications, continued education and experience. Be sure to ask what percentage of their practice is related to the care of birds. Not every vet will be qualified to provide medical assistance for your beloved bird.
Finding a true avian veterinarian may take a little time and effort on your part, may even cost a bit more money. However if your bird is as important to you as mine is to me. That is a small price to pay.
