Thermo Problem, involving ideal gasses and specific heat?
Two kilograms of a gas with molecular weight 28 are contained in a closed, rigid tank fitted with an electric resistor. The resistor draws a constant current of 10 amp at a voltage of 12V for 10min. Measurements indicate that wehn equilibrium is reached, the temperature of the gas has increased by 40.3 degrees C. Heat transfer to the surroundings is estimated to occur at a constant rate of 20W. Assuming ideal gas behavior, determine an average value of the specific heat cp, in kJ/kg*K of the gas in this temperature interval based on the measured data.
1) Calculate the energy that has been spend to heat the gas
Energy = Electric energy input – heat loss
= (current *voltage – 20 W) * time
= (10 A * 12 V – 20 W) * 600 s = 60kJ
2) Calculate the specific heat
specific heat = Energy input / temp increase / mass
= 60 kJ / 40.3 K / 2 kg = 0.744 kJ/(kg*K)

Electric and gas hot water systems accounting for approximately 20% of a household’s greenhouse gas emissions,and by installing a solar water system you will reduce these emissions and also save up to 75% of your water heating costs! There exist two types of collectors:
- flat plate collectors (great for when tank must also be roof mounted)
- evacuated tubes (great for frost prone areas)
Flat plate collectors work on copper pipes running through a glass covered collector, often connected to a water storage tank on the roof. The hot water can then thermo-syphon itself in and out of the tank, thus heating the water. The updated option of flat plate collectors are evacuated tubes.
Evacuated tubes use a glass tube with a vacuum inside it and copper pipes running through the centre. The copper pipes are all connected to a common manifold which is then connected to a slow flow circulation pump which pumps water to a storage tank below, thus heating the hot water during the day. The hot water can be used at night or the next day due to the insulation of the tank.
The evacuation tube system are superior as they can extract the heat out of the air on a humid day and don’t need direct sunlight. Due to the vacuum inside the glass tube, the total efficiency in all areas is higher.
Solar pool heating uses a similar technology to building / household solar hot water systems. Solar pool heating involves covering a roof with a black blanket of coils and pipes which also get heated by the sun combined with a slow flow pump which circulates the water through the panel and into the pool. Unfortunately Energy Matters only installs building / household solar water heating systems and does not perform installation of pool water heating systems.

Need some ideas for a mechanical engineering thesis?
I’m in a grad-program of mechanical engineering. Can anyone give me some ideas on the thesis for my master degree? I’m interested in fluid/thermo/heat transfer subjects; something aerospace industry related would be nice.
I’m looking at this; “the boundary layer separation of super sonic flow exiting nozzle due to the upstream parameters” topic suggested by my advisor. This interests me, but it seems too complicated.
Before I go for the difficult path, I want to get some more ideas.

A different suggestion entirely:
Computer simulation of auto safety combinations.
By this, a probabilistic simulation program which permits specifying transfer functions for various Sensor-Control parameter combinations, acting in combination in optimizing safety and control, based on a rules-driven computer analysis and control system.
The data base would be the range of probabilistic variations in expected performance of sensor and controller accuracy, timing and control effect. The idea is that, instead of manufacturing different control or sensor elements and physically implementing them and their application and effect, you simulate the system with a computer, doing basic Monte Carlo methods. Each total system performance test using random selections from the probabilistic individual performance range would comprise one datum, the millions of simulations presenting the probabilistic range of performance based on the specified elements and their control interaction. This permits probabilistic performance measures of any combination of device and control you can think of, using a Rules-driven computer control system. The Monte Carlo plots would show the probabilistic effect of different designs (existing or simply conceptual) on safety, performance and survivability. These would be correlated with cost, including required design parameters for manufacturers.
It’s the sort of thesis a ME and a CS could team up on, with their advisor’s approval. It would lead to proposals for instrumentation, as well as safety and/or operational systems, in any area of design, from home to industry. Dead cheap, using just computer simulation and the creativity of the engineers involved. The key theoretical contributions meriting Thesis consideration, apart from the value of optimal packaged systems with visual presentation of their merit, would include suggestions for instrumentation at present unavailable together with analysis criteria for their design and performance, and the mathematical relationships between control outputs and their physical effect on the overall system.
This would certainly extrapolate directly to aerospace.
I’ve used this in control engineering applications, in a small way, with good effect, but for some reason the approach is not widely used in industry.
