Tiel Conure
Expense of owning a bird?
I’m low income but manage and prioritize my money very well.
I know a macaw is out as well as most larger birds.
I was thinking possibly a tiel but now I’m thinking maybe a green cheek conure or some other smaller bird.
I just want to be able to take good care of any bird, any pet.
Any ideas?
What about some of the very low cost big birds with cages that I see sometimes in my local bargain sheet? If cage is large enough would that be an idea or not?
What does it cost to feed and provide toys to one large bird each month?
I do have a credit card for medical care but would only use it for vet expenses and would never charge a bird or regular items, it’s for back up only for vet.
Smaller parrots are just as fun and intelligent as bigger ones.
Cockatiels are very good birds.
I have a cocaktiel, and she doesn’t cost much to take care of. Other than providing the largest cage you can afford (min. for cockatiel is 18x18x20 inches), you probably need to get around $50 worth of perches, toys, etc, and seed or pellet is around $5-$10 and lasts a few months as long as you’re giving them a mixed diet (vegetables, grains, etc)
For larger birds, you’ll need a way bigger cage, more expensive toys, as well as more food. But again, as long as you give them a mixed diet, you can just pull some broccoli out of your fridge instead of buying a bunch load of pellets (which, in large amounts, aren’t much better than seeds)
But for any bird, if they get sick or injured, vet bills can go up in the hundreds. Even more than that is the treatment is for more serious diseases/injuries.
I can recommend some medium sized birds.
- Indian Ringnecks/Alexandrines. They’re very beautiful, and a lot can learn to talk. http://www.indianringneck.com/
- Quakers. Adorable, playful, funny little birds with a big attitude and good mimicking voice. http://www.quakerparrots.com/
- Conures. Again, adorable, playful, but loud, and can learn to talk as well. Sun conures are especially beautiful, in my opinion.
- Smaller cockatoos, such as Goffin’s cockatoos. Cockatoos are very very cuddly. I love them to bits.

What Kind of Parrot Would you reccomend for me?
I absolutely LOVE all kinds of parrots and I have one cockatiel currently. I really want to get another bird eventually, but I just can’t decide on a breed. Here’s waht I want in a bird:
-medium to large size (at least the size of a conure)
-CAn learn at least a few words
-not overly tempermentall and demanding
-not extremely loud (I will have neighbors)
-can entertain its self when I’m gone
-nice looking, I love color 
-could tolerate another, smaller bird (my ‘tiel)
So, what breed would you suggest?
I notice you don’t mention price, playful, or cuddly. In which case my first choice for you would be a pionus. They’re medium sized, gentle, and quiet, though less playful or cuddly than many other parrots. The Maximillian’s is probably the best talker. see http://www.avianweb.com/pionus.htm
Pyrrhura conures (e.g., green-cheeked and maroon-bellied) are, by definition, “conure size”, but they’re much smaller than the Aratinga conures (e.g., sun, jenday), which is probably what you meant. On the other hand, they’re also much quieter. Sun conures are notoriously loud and would be a bad choice for an apartment. Lovebirds would be unlikely to get along with a cockatiel.
Quaker or monk parrots are a bit bigger than a cockatiel, and not too terribly loud. They talk well, but are fairly demanding. Their biggest disadvantage is that they’re illegal in many places:

You could also consider a poicephalus (e.g., Senegal or Meyers). They’re also a bit bigger than cockatiels, not too loud, and generally playful, cuddly, and not too difficult. Many talk well. see http://proaviculture.com/poicephalus.htm

You probably want to avoid Aratinga conures, amazons, cockatoos, and macaws on the basis of noise.
